High rise motorcycle pants come down to one measurement most riders never check. On a bike you sit, lean toward the bars and roll your hips forward, and a waistband that stayed put on the sidewalk starts to move. That measurement is the rise. Here is what it means, why it matters more on a bike and how to measure it.
What High Rise Motorcycle Pants Actually Mean
Rise is the distance from the crotch seam up to the top of the waistband. Front rise is measured up the front and back rise up the back, and the back is usually longer. It decides where the waistband lands on your body:
- Low rise. Sits on or below the hip bones.
- Mid rise. Sits between the hip bones and the navel.
- High rise. Sits at or about the navel, close to your natural waist.
Stores do not share one scale, so a measurement in centimeters tells you more than a label. Rise is also separate from waist size, so two pairs with the same waist can sit in different places.
Why Rise Matters More on a Bike
Standing up, rise is a style choice. Seated on a bike, it changes how the pants behave:
- Leaning forward. A short rise drops at the back as you lean, leaving a gap where your jacket rides up and the air gets in.
- Sitting still. A rise that is too tall for your torso folds at the stomach once your hips roll forward.
- Bent knees. Your knees stay up on a bike, so a rise that is too short pulls at the seat.
- Pocket position. Rise sets where the hip and cargo pockets sit once you are seated.
A belt holds the waistband where you set it, and the Tactical Belt adjusts without holes. It cannot lengthen a rise that is too short, so settle the rise first.
Chaps sidestep rise altogether, since they sit over your regular pants and leave the seat open. That is a different set-up with its own trade-offs, and our motorcycle chaps vs pants guide lays them out.
What RoadVault's Size Guide Says About Rise
RoadVault riding pants list a front rise for every size, which makes them easy to compare with a pair you already own. The guide says to match your natural waist to the waist column, and it measures every pair flat:
| Size | Waist (cm) | Front rise (cm) | Front rise (in) |
|---|---|---|---|
| XXS | 70 | 25 | 9.8 |
| XS | 75 | 26 | 10.2 |
| S | 80 | 26 | 10.2 |
| M | 85 | 27 | 10.6 |
| L | 90 | 28 | 11.0 |
| XL | 95 | 29 | 11.4 |
| 2XL | 100 | 30 | 11.8 |
| 3XL | 105 | 30 | 11.8 |
| 4XL | 110 | 31 | 12.2 |
Two things stand out. Front rise runs from 25 cm (9.8 in) in XXS to 31 cm (12.2 in) in 4XL, and it never moves more than 1 cm from one size to the next, while the waist moves 5 cm a step. Sizing up gives you more waist and thigh room but almost no extra rise. The page does not call the rise low, mid or high, so go by the numbers. Men's and women's cuts share the same sizes.
How to Measure Rise and Test the Fit
All you need is a tape measure and a pair of pants you like:
- Pick a reference pair. Choose pants you can sit and lean in without tugging at the waist.
- Lay them flat. Button them up and smooth the fabric, the way the chart is measured.
- Measure the front rise. Run the tape from the crotch seam straight up to the top of the waistband.
- Compare with the chart. Allow the 1 to 3 cm tolerance the guide itself gives.
- Do the lean test. Once the pants arrive, sit on the bike with your knees bent and lean toward the bars. The waistband should stay covered at the back and lie flat at the front.
If you land between two sizes, the guide says to size up, and our sizing guide walks through the rest of the fit. Then set the waist with a belt instead of hoping the rise will change.
Common Questions
Are high rise motorcycle pants better for riding?
Not automatically. A higher rise keeps your lower back covered when you lean, but it has to suit your torso, or it folds at the stomach when you sit. The right rise stays put while you are seated and leaning, and our relaxed fit guide covers the leg room that goes with it.
Do low rise pants work on a motorcycle?
Some riders manage, but a low rise tends to drop at the back once you lean forward. A belt holds the waistband without adding length, so on longer rides a rise that covers your lower back is usually easier to live with.
What rise do RoadVault pants have?
The size guide lists front rise from 25 cm in XXS to 31 cm in 4XL, but it does not label it low, mid or high. Measure a pair you already like, compare the numbers and read the guide's size advice before you order.
